James (Jim) Grove
James (Jim) Grove is one of the UK’s most respected and experienced specialists in CBRN and hazardous materials training and response, a reputation built over decades of frontline service, specialist instruction, and sustained professional research.
Jim served for 30 years with the West Midlands Fire Service, bringing his operational career to a national level during his final three years when he was seconded to the National CBRN Centre, where he played a key role in delivering the national DIM uplift programme. This period marked the culmination of a career defined by technical excellence, strategic contribution, and a deep commitment to firefighter and public safety.
With over a decade of experience as a Hazardous Materials Advisor, Jim was a core member of a regional specialist team responsible for hazardous materials detection, identification, and monitoring in complex and high‑risk environments. Alongside his operational responsibilities, he became a trusted instructor, delivering training to both experienced personnel and new firefighter recruits in hazardous materials response, environmental protection, and the use of specialist CBRN(e) detection and identification equipment.
Beyond operational delivery, Jim has made a significant contribution to the wider professional community. He has presented at both national and international conferences on hazardous materials and firefighter safety, sharing practical insight, evidence‑based learning, and lessons drawn from real‑world experience.
Widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading authorities in CBRN training and response, Jim’s expertise has been shaped by years of personal commitment, academic study, and applied research, pursued alongside his professional roles at the highest operational levels. Within the UK hazmat and CBRN community, he is well known not only for the depth of his experience, but also for his approachability, clarity, and ability to translate complex technical subjects into effective, real‑world capability - qualities that have earned him a near ‘celebrity’ status among peers and practitioners.

From the MD
We are absolutely delighted to have Jim as part of The Collective delivery team. For as long as I’ve been involved in the hazmat world, I have heard Jim’s name as someone who’s opinion, knowledge and skillset should be listened to and respected. Jim is one of the most passionate and authentic hazmat and CBRN instructors and assessors I’ve had the privilege to work alongside, and it’s a privilege to have him join us for the next stage of his hazmat career.
